The laboratory of digital twins in power industry

A new youth laboratory is opened this year at the Ural Power Engineering Institute, Ural Federal University.

As a part of the national project “Science and Universities”, young scientists from the Ural Power Engineering Institute won the funding from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science for the creation of a youth research laboratory in the field of “New Energy Systems”. The laboratory is made up only of young scientists under the age of 39. This is the first so much “young” unit of the Ural Power Engineering Institute in the literal and figurative sense.

“The main scientific research of the laboratory is related to the development of a multi-level multi-agent system for the modeling of electric power facilities, their infrastructure linkages and their technological processes to optimize operating modes, safe and reliable operation of the power system. In addition, the laboratory deals with issues, related to the processing, analysis and presentation of data, as well as the use of machine learning algorithms in various tasks of power industry,” says Alexandra Khalyasmaa, head of the Laboratory “Digital Twins in power industry”.

“Laboratory scientists are already doing research work, related to digitization in the field of power industry of large domestic energy companies. Also, the results of the work of this laboratory are integrated into the educational process of two advanced Ural Power Engineering Institute master programs – https://vk.com/ai_energy_urfu  (Artificial intelligence for power industry applications) and https://vk.com/smart_city_urfu (Energy for smart cities) to ensure relationship of science, education and industry. We are already involving some students from these educational programs in our ongoing work with industry partners,” says Stanislav Eroshenko, senior research scientist of the laboratory.

Also, as a part of the laboratory’s activities, a large number of various diagnostic equipment is purchased in order to create an accredited center for diagnosing the state of equipment.
