INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES FOR ELECTRICAL POWER INDUSTRY

Tomsk Polytechnic University

The control of large power systems is a complex engineering task, which requires coordinated cooperation of a huge number of professionals from different technical domains. Any decision on the change of power system operating conditions is based on the information, collected in real time from thousands of objects. The information shall be captured, stored and processed with the use of complex algorithms to ensure reliable and optimal operation of the power system on different control horizons. To allow this, the advanced information technologies and specialized software are required.

The functions and tasks of system operators are very specific, which makes impossible to simply transfer commercial software from one country to another. Thus necessary specialized software and information technologies are individually developed or upgraded with the functions required for the System operator. Besides, some unique types of information systems, like centralized remedial action schemes, automatic generation control systems, real-time stability monitoring systems are used only in electrical power field.

Thus the development and maintenance of information systems for electrical power industry require interdisciplinary competences. The program “Information technologies for electrical power industry” is aimed at training such interdisciplinary specialist, able to apply the cutting-edge information technologies for digitalization projects in power systems.

The program is implemented in cooperation with the industrial partner – Russian Power System Operator, including the following activities:

  • giving entrance examination and covering educational fees;
  • lecturing, supervising practical training and graduation work;
  • providing access to corporate infrastructure for learning needs;
  • providing the tasks urgent for the company and materials for graduation work;
  • providing part-type employment during education time and payed internships;
  • employing graduates.

The Erasmus+ ESSENCE project added value:

  • the learning outcomes and content of the program courses and IT-courses of ESSENCE core curriculum that was developed in cooperation with EU experts and industry representatives are agreed;
  • the experience in competence based approach application and advance teaching techniques is integrated into the educational program;
  • cutting-edge equipment is installed to allow learning of advanced IT technologies used in electrical power industry (phasor measurements, IEC 61850, machine learning and others), as well as to improve efficiency of online and blended learning.
