Practical Training

ABSTRACT

The practical training is over sighted by academic supervisor and workplace supervisor. The practical training is held at a company or research laboratory which main activities are in the major of the educational program or at a company dealing with the minor (ICT) and have being implemented projects in SES field. The choice of a company/research laboratory for practical training shall be validated by the curriculum supervisor. The exact list of the companies and requirements to workplace supervisor are defined by the university and shall comply with internal regulations of the university (usually industry placement agreement is established between the university and company).

Practical training takes place after the 2nd semester (or/and in 4th semester). If a student works on SES project during practical training, results of it can be used as a basis for the master thesis. Before the start of practical training a student is provided with the guidelines, where the following instructions are given:

1. Selection criteria for companies or laboratories, interaction patterns Student↔Company/Laboratory↔University and Workplace Supervisor↔Student↔Academic Supervisor.

2. Recommendations for a student containing the instructions for structure and layout of Motivation letter, CV, Reflective Journaling Assignment, Resume, Final report and Presentation.

The goals of practical training are to apply academic skills to practical professional activities and develop an experience of working in professional environment. When choosing a place of a practical training, a student and an academic supervisor shall aim the following objectives:

  • to explain the business segments of a company/research laboratory, its interactions with other players (government, utilities, vendors, integrators and etc.) to develop the knowledge about the Smart Grid Business models and future career opportunities;
  • to explain the Smart Grid concept at the national and international level, business opportunities, industry strategies and government initiatives in the field of Smart Grid;
  • to develop the skills of acting individually to solve professional problem with respect to deadlines and available resources;
  • to obtain practical skills to work in a professional team;
  • to apply technical standards and project documentation in professional life;
  • to explain business processes of a company and obtain practical skills to work with technological and IT assets;
  • to develop the skills to operate technological processes and equipment with the use of SCADA and Management Systems;
  • to develop the skills to implement testing, data processing and preparing technical reports in SES field;
  • to develop the skills to implement feasibility study of a project and present the results.

The objectives can be individually supplemented and modified depending on the company/research laboratory size and profile and workplace supervisor suggestions

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Teamwork: to build collaborative relationships with colleagues representing diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, religions, lifestyles, and viewpoints; to be able to work within a team structure both independently with a little supervision and on international team, and can negotiate and manage conflict.
  • Professional work style: strongly demonstrate high personal drive, result oriented and service minded work style, and time workload management, acts responsibly with the interests of the larger community in mind; to be able to work in a high paced and highly dynamic environment
  • Career Management: to identify and articulate one’s skills, strengths, knowledge, and experiences relevant to the position desired and career goals, and identify areas necessary for professional growth.
  • General professional outcomes: to apply academic skills to a practical professional setting, and reflect on how classroom experience applies to a professional setting.
  • Electrical power and IT assets: to leverage existing assets, technical standards and project documentation, act efficiently to complete tasks, and accomplish goals. The individual demonstrates effective adaptability to new and emerging electrical engineering- and IT-technologies.
  • Oral and written communications: to express ideas clearly and effectively in written and oral forms to persons inside and outside of an organization.

COURSE OUTLINE

General tasks.

A student shall study goals and organizational structure of the company, requirements to the interns and entry requirements for positions that student would like to apply for after graduation, as well professional development system adopted by the company shall be examined.

Electrical power assets.

A student shall study electrical power assets and business (technological) processes of the company.

ICT assets.

A student shall study main ICT assets of the company.

Individual assignment and participation in projects.

A student shall complete the assignments from the workplace supervisor

The request form for teaching materials (TM)
