Course “Artificial intelligence” pre-piloted by UrFU

The course on Artificial intelligence and machine learning in Smart Energy Systems developed within the framework of ERASMUS+ ESSENCE project was for the first time implemented for foreign students during the Summer University 2019 held at Ural Federal University.

Moreover, on July 8-10, 2019, within the framework of the Ideathon (one of the activities at Summer University) students from India and France were working together in small groups to solve real industrial case. Within the track “Energy”, the participants were looking for the solution of technical state assessment problem of high-voltage power transformers using machine learning approaches.

After getting the initial data – a large array of data brought from a real-life power network facility – foreign students independently worked on the solution of the problem. Note that all the groups used Python as a tool for power transformers’ technical state assessment. The developers, tutors and mentors of the course are the members of the academic staff of Ural Power Engineering Institute Stanislav Eroshenko and Alexandra Khalyasmaa.

According to the developers’ point of view, the scope of machine learning and artificial intelligence in electric power systems is not limited to technical state assessment of high-voltage equipment. During the introductory lecture of the Summer University Stanislav Eroshenko and Aleksandra Khalyasmaa presented another project dealing with machine learning methods application, namely “Solar power plants energy production forecasting based on AI & ML”. This project is also a part of the educational program developed within the scope of ERASMUS+ ESSENCE project. It is of crucial importance for smart energy systems with a high proportion of renewable energy sources based on solar energy.
